Cllr Mrs Alice Victoria Ashburn née Meehan 

 

Alice joined the council in June 2025 after having been successful at an interview for co-option. Originally from Padstow, Alice lives in Saltash, Essa with her young family of 3 children, husband and cockapoo pup!  The family have lived in Saltash since 2018, having returned to their home county of Cornwall after a brief residence in Plymouth whilst Alice worked for the British Red Cross and then completed her PGCE with outstanding grading at Marjon. 

 

Working online as an educational adviser, Alice specialises in home education support and curriculum planning for home educating families, SEND and particular success with 11+ tuition, having been contracted to create 11+ papers during lockdown. Alice is also a private teacher, working contracts for Local Authorities across the country for EOTAS and A Level lecturing for one of her passions: Environmental Science. Alice is interested in SEND support and has experience in supporting dyslexia, dyscalculia, Pathological Demand Avoidance and a particular focus on children and young people's mental health. Alice is a governor at Bishop Cornish Primary School and has experience in supporting personnel and SEND governance, as well as being involved in finance decision making processes. Alice has training in urban planning, having completed urban planning modules at university and GIS mapping systems during her Geography and Politics undergraduate degree at the University of Birmingham, graduating the academic year they were awarded University of the Year in 2013. 

 

Alice has been involved with a number of charities including: volunteering for the RSPCA; event planning, training and recruitment for the Nightline Associated (affiliated with the Samaritans); fundraising for St Luke's Hospice corporate events; as well as being employed by the British Red Cross involving fundraising, raising awareness of different schemes and volunteer training and management. Alice is an Infant Feeding Peer Supporter for Cornwall Council and has presented training to the team on infant feeding after trauma. Recently, Alice has been involved in advocacy for the Birth Trauma Association with initial talks for setting up the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Birth Trauma, she has shared her story in the national media and international television in order to raise awareness of the cause. Alice volunteers for the Birth Trauma Association moderating their social media and interacting with parents who suffer with poor mental health post-partum. Since 2022 Alice has been lecturing nationally to university teaching hospital's midwifery, gynaecology and obstetrics teams in order to increase provider awareness of post-partum PTSD and associated disorders, as well as advocating for changes to maternity services and the Women's Health Strategy for England, the first of its kind.
