John Steers

John was born and raised in the Midlands and moved to Saltash in 1988 to take a post of Transport Manager at a local food distribution firm.  John’s children were raised and educated in Saltash at St Stephens School and Saltash Comprehensive before flying the nest to study at York and Swansea Universities respectively.

John has spent his entire working career in the Road Haulage and Distribution Industry with positions ranging from HGV Class 1 Driver to Contracts Manager for a National Brewery.  John gained valuable experience in Man Management, Unionised Environments, Disciplinary Procedures, Kinetics and Ergonomics, Customer Services and is a qualified ISO 9002 Auditor.

John took early retirement in April 2026 to close a career that had seen him work with Metals, Plastics, Glass, Food and Alcohol. This included a 5 year secondment for a National Brewery to be a Contracts Manager in London, where he was responsible for the distribution of beers and ales to hundreds of pubs and clubs in Central London including the West End and Soho.

Johns professional career and the often long and unsociable hours meant he was unable to take part with local volunteer groups, but he was one of the original members who founded the Tamar Tag Action Group and now that he has retired, he will be looking to pursue this and other local causes involved with Infrastructure, Public Transport and Green Spaces.

John retired from full-time employment in April 2026, although he has retained his HGV Licence because he enjoys driving. In his spare time John enjoys football and rugby and is a regular user of the facilities at the Saltash Leisure Centre.  John and his wife Jan enjoy exploring Cornwall and discovering quiet secluded spots for walk and picnics and occasionally travel up country to spend time with their children and grandchildren.  They also enjoy gardening and eating out in local establishments.
