David Yates

David has lived in Saltash since 1983, moving here while in the Royal Navy.
After retiring from the Royal Navy in 1998 he joined Babcock Marine (then DML) and worked for them as an engineer before retiring.

David joined Saltash Town Council in 2007 and has served as Mayor and Deputy Mayor as well as Chairman of the Services Committee (and its predecessor the Industry Commerce and Transportation and Tourism Committee).

Over the course of the current council his main activity has been involvement, as Chairman, in the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group which is taking the lead in preparing the Saltash Neighbourhood Development Plan for controlling future housing, industry and infrastructure development in Saltash up to 2030.

He said that one of the most important parts of preparing the Saltash Neighbourhood Plan is getting people’s views of what they wanted for Saltash in the future. This has been done by sending out questionnaires and having a variety of consultation meetings including weekly face to face discussions on Saturday mornings in the Library and taking part in “Meet your Councillors” events in Fore Street.

He said that the results of the questionnaires and the Neighbourhood Plan consultations have confirmed the importance of the planning and management of the proposed improvements in Saltash including taking over and refurbishing the Library and Station Building and expanding Town Council responsibility for public spaces
